John Messelt earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Arts Education from Moorhead State University, his Master of Arts degree from St. Cloud State University and his Educations Specialist Degree in Educational Leadership from the University of St. Thomas.
He has had thirty-four years of experience in the field of Education serving as a teacher of Special Education for eight years in the Mid-State Educational Cooperative at Little Falls, Minnesota; a Director of Special Education for the Dairyland Special Education Cooperative and the Benton-Stearns Education District for a total of fourteen years and as Executive Director of the Benton-Stearns Education District for four years. During that time he was instrumental in the development of a Day Treatment program for Emotional and Behavior Disordered Students that has successfully served severely impaired students for nearly twenty years and is viewed as a model program throughout Minnesota.
He served as Superintendent of Schools for the Kimball Area Public Schools in Kimball, Minnesota for four years and during his tenure at the Kimball Schools led the district through a Strategic Planning initiative implementing the Cambridge framework for planning. He is currently the Executive Director of the Central Minnesota Educational Research and Development Council, and organization that provides a wide range of educational support services for over eighty public and private school districts in central Minnesota.
Mr. Messelt has been active in his professional organizations having served on the Board of Directors of the
Minnesota Association of School Administrators and being elected to the position of President of the Minnesota Administrators of Special Education. He continues to serve both of these organizations and plays a significant role in the generation of funds for a foundation that supports the educational endeavors of individuals pursuing careers in Special Educations Administration.
Serving as an Associate for Cambridge Strategic Services, he has provided training for strategic planning and facilitated strategic planning initiatives for school districts and organizations throughout the United State and Canada. Through his own consulting firm, John P. Messelt and Associates, he also provides training and group facilitation in the areas of Customer Services in Education, Conflict Management and Building and Maintaining Effective Teams.
